All You Need Is...Love?

Love is all you need... ?

Ok, here's the thing...and this is gonna be a rambling ranty ramble...

WTF does this ad even mean?! This thing has gotten quite stale as I tried to figure out, first...what the hell are y'all trying to say here? And second, can I even put into words my thoughts and confusion surrounding it? I mean, this has been in rewrites for weeks now. But just looking at this ad just works my damn nerves.

"If we had a dollar for every time LOVE triumphed over cancer..."

Love can triumph over cancer? Well then...shouldn't it be fucking cured by now? I'm pretty sure so many beautiful people who are sadly no longer with us had PLENTY of LOVE. It didn't triumph. I'm pretty sure I've had lots and lots of love, several surgeries plus excellent doctors and surgeons, hard core chemo, skin searing radiation, and the jury is still out on whether or not LOVE plus all that other stuff "triumphed over cancer".

"LOVE cancer's greatest fear."
What? cancer doesn't fear. It's fucking cancer.

"...finish the fight..."
Ugh. Just...yuck.

I dunno...I guess my problem with this is, when you get right down to it...the tiresome battle language of the thing. And from an organization that should know SO much better by now. (I'm pretty sure it was a recent post from the
Cancer Curmudgeon that reminded me that I wanted to bitch blog about this ad, but chemohead here forgot! LOL!) And I am just kinda tired of ranting ad nauseam on it. Cause it ain't going anywhere.

Anyway, I totally understand what you're trying to say here. I just am annoyed at how it's being said.

And can we please, once and for all, for the love of *insert deity of choice here* change the language of cancer?

It's easy...

Oh my. I hadn't seen this one, but of course, I've seen similar ads. Haven't we all? It's all about marketing and playing to people's emotions in order to get donations. In other words, it's about manipulation. And this ad is particularly blatant in this. It's also a load of crap. Love? Cancer fears it? As you said, doesn't even make sense. And yes, an organization such as ACS should be held to a higher standard. Thanks for the ramble. I'm in complete agreement with you on this poorly thought-out and highly manipulative ad.

Thanks Nancy! Yeah, I get that money needs to be raised...for RESEARCH. I just didn't care for the way this ad is done. But I've come to expect stuff like this from ACS. But it just seems like, like Komen, they are more about their "walks" & self promotion. This thing has been grinding my last nerve since December. You put it so much better than I do. The difference between an actual WRITER & a silly rambler LOL!. But yeah, what YOU said...manipulative! xx

Yes, soooo many cancer orgs (medical, fundraiser, whatever) SHOULD know that this is a touchy topic for some of us here in CancerLand--a theme I'll re-visit soon--thanks for reminding me! It seems all those ACS ads were just awful--don't think I saw this one. So tired of cancer mythology, AND patients, being sold.
Thanks for the shout out!!! xoxoxo

This ad reminds me of a post I once read from CC (Wendi) where she stated that cancer doesn't have a brain (are we now expecting cancer to be emotional and shit? Not gonna happen!). This ad almost sounds like a platitude to me. Get real!

And you're right, the way we talk about cancer is sometimes ridiculous. I'd rather just stick to science. These are the organizations that should be leading, and if this is how they are pushing their ideas, what hope does that leave for the cancer culture? And for our society? I believe the change has to start with these organizations because they are the ones with the experience and they also own a level of power, we patients, do not have.

Love your rants. Keep them coming! xo

I missed this one, too. The ACS's new PR folks must be on hallucinogenics, that's all I can say. They've been coming out with some seriously, offensively stupid trash ads in recent months. If love triumphed over cancer, none of my friends would have died of it. *sigh* Kathi

Barf! What does it even mean? Like love conquers all -- even cancer? Kill it with kindness? I mean, WTF!?! Kimberly, love what you said. What Nancy said. And then some.

So interesting, I just saw this ad this week and had a similar reaction....and then your post popped up in my email. I'm with you on this, it's a very odd thing to pull at people's emotions showing a bald bride obviously in the midst of chemo, with the word LOVE and then ask for a donation. Just hit me the wrong way on so many levels. As you and Nancy both say, it's just so manipulative.

Ohmigosh y'all! I totally didn't expect any reaction to this post because it is so, so stale, but thanks so much for all of your thoughts & comments here! Yes, this ad is absofuckinglutely disgusting! Thanks for chiming in, validating and stuff... xx

Hi Kathi! I agree. I dunno wtf is going on over at ACS, but they need to stop it. Just STOP! Thanks so much for adding your thoughts here! xx

Me too Eileen! Nancy has a much more eloquent way of saying it! But yeah....it's def sickening! xx

Hi Claudia! I guess I'm glad I went ahead & posted about it, even though I felt like it was just too old news. Didn't realize they're still using this campaign. Yeah, when I very first saw this ad in my news feed, it just flew all over me...I was just SO pissed off about it. And every time I see it, the rage is the same. xx

Hey Rebecca! Thanks so much for reading & commenting. It was def a post from CC that reminded me this was in drafts, waiting to be rewritten again. It's just so disgusting that these orgs do this. They really should know better. And just fucking stop it already! GAWD!!!

Yeah, pretty sure I'll be ranting again soon! xx
